I have been a little obsessed with creating an underwater letterbox.
Has anyone ever attempted one of these or come across one of these? I
am trying to do it with the least amount of "trash", and the least
amount of rust. I was first thinking lock box, but now I wonder if
rocks in a heavy-duty industrial waterproof container might work.
I'd be interested in any of your thoughts/experiences.

Will it have pigment ink so the colors don't run?
IDEA: Using a plastic container -- that passes the submarine test in
the kitchen sink -- put it in a net that is held down with a weight --
one of those round donut shapes for weightlifting. Use one of those
quick click rings (from the hiking store or Target) so the finder
doesn't drown trying to untye the thing -- I know how focused some of
those CT boxers can get!

There is one in Pennsylvania. It is an Igloo juice container with
lead fishing sinkers and drain holes. And you don't have to get
wet to get it. I am interested to see how it weathers the winter.
Good luck

On the Letterboxing Northern California list, paulonthepark has one
perhaps you can ask him how it is done.

I've found an underwater letterbox that was a small glass jelly jar
within a mason jar tethered by a string attached to a dock. The
glass is clear in the water apart from the contents of the
letterbox. Rocks were added to the mason jar to keep it weighted
down. Haven't found many 'underwater' letterboxes per se, but have
found a bunch of unintentional underwater letterboxes--those mostly
didn't fare so well. ;)

I haven't actually seen it but I've heard of one in the Oxley Nature Center Series in Tulsa, OK. You might contact the placer of those and ask about it.

INTENTIONALLY? No.
Hmmm. Having just come from the Bay of Fundy, and being a coastal type, I'd advise considering tidal actions, too. In a lake or such it'll be uniformly submerged. Elswhere, there may be exposure twice per day or a lot more depth. Just a thought...
